Our RSW community

Hotham Primary School in London understand the importance of road safety for their children. During Road Safety Week they talked about road safety and promoted important messages to parents. The children also brought in their scooters to learn how to ride safely near the roads.

PC Boyden from Kent Police Roads Policing Team visited Dunton Green Primary School during Road Safety Week and worked with every class to talk about important road safety messages. He spoke about the basics of how and where to cross a road safely, the importance of wearing a seat belt and how to stay safe when walking or cycling near roads.

Royal High School Bath got involved in Road Safety Week 2019 to ensure that students knew how to keep themselves safe when out and about. They used the opportunity to discuss how safe they felt near the roads, using the selfie megaphones, and what needed to change to keep them safe. They displayed messages and infographics around school and highlighted what safety measures were most important to them.

Road Safety Week 2019 sponsors Kwik Fit produced flyers to remind drivers to carry out regular vehicle checks before every journey. During the week, they partnered with SafetyKleen to offer free winter vehicle checks and encouraged drivers and staff to keep their vehicles as safe as possible.

Regional sponsors Scottish Water worked with Brake to promote road safety to over 4,000 staff, five million customers and the wider public as part of their commitment to care for the environment, with a series of events at their major sites across the country. Sandy Duff, driver safety manager for Scottish Water, said: “We operate a large fleet across the whole of Scotland and we are committed to road safety. We are delighted to be supporting Road Safety Week 2019 and want everyone to get involved and do their bit.”

The Active and Safer Travel Team from Hertfordshire Road Safety Partnership had a busy RSW. The team ran an awareness stall to inform and engage Hertfordshire County Council staff and supporters. They visited schools to deliver cycle and scooter training, while sharing important road safety messages. Social media platforms were utilised to highlight key road safety messages, their school crossing patrols and the work that the partnership undertakes to encourage safe driving. The partnership includes key members such as Hertfordshire Highways, Trading Standards, Roads Policing and the Fire and Rescue Service.

The Hill Farm Riding School organised a hack with their young equestrians and adult riders. They also covered the mini road rider badge during their pony club sessions, covering the importance of horse-riding safety. The children and adults benefited greatly from the event and enjoyed a safe ride around the area.

Horsham District Council’s team of Neighbourhood Wardens got involved in RSW. Teams in Storrington provided activity packs for Little Bears Pre-school in Sullington. Wardens in Ashington visited the local toddler group Shining Stars and ran road safety activities and gave out stickers and postcards for the children to take home. Pulborough engaged with children and grown-ups on their morning school drop-off and gave out hi-vis bands and stickers. Communities in Billingshurst, Horsham, Steyning and Southwater also shared road safety advice and information from their Neighbourhood Wardens.

Crews from Huddersfield Fire Station in West Yorkshire raised awareness about road safety with a demonstration at Kirklees College. They showed the process of cutting someone free from a car and talked about how crashes impact the emergency services. They also talked about the causes of crashes and how they affect people - from bereaved families and seriously injured casualties to the wider community.

Members of Gateshead Council's Fleet Management and Road Safety teams worked together on an exchanging places event to raise awareness about blind spots around trucks.The public event was held in a nearby supermarket carpark and allowed cyclists to sit in the cab of a truck, while also giving truck drivers the chance to see the viewpoint from a cyclist.
